ENSI LogoBased on a specific business transaction – approval of travel requests in a dynamic workflow – the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI gathered the necessary know-how and initial experience in process digitisation. 1stQuad supported the authority with intensive coaching during the digitalization of business processes and was significantly involved in the implementation of the project.

The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI is the supervisory authority for Swiss nuclear installations – from nuclear power plants and research reactors to interim storage facilities for radioactive waste. Not least for reasons of confidentiality and safety, ENSI maintains its own IT department. ENSI-IT was given the task of digitizing various work processes and wanted to acquire additional know-how for this purpose.

Digitization of business processes

1stQuad had already built a successful intranet platform for ENSI and was commissioned to coach the IT department in the digitalization of business processes based on a concrete business case. A typical approval workflow was used as an example: in the future, travel requests are to be submitted and approved via a largely automated process.

The special feature: The approval run should not be defined by human authority. Instead, an algorithm uses various factors to dynamically calculate which management levels must approve the request and whether Controlling is also involved. The algorithm takes the necessary information from the application form and the Active Directory – which contains the organizational structure, for example. The process is therefore not fixed, but controlled by variable parameters.

The implementation of the travel request process was managed by ENSI-IT and supported by 1stQuad. Technically, a combination of Nintex Workflow and Nintex Forms was used, which is based on the existing SharePoint intranet. With the knowledge and experience gained from the project, ENSI is now in a position to independently digitalize further business processes in the future.
